Keloids

Keloid Scar Treatment at Clayton Dermatology

Keloids are a type of raised scar that develop when the body produces an excessive amount of collagen as a wound heals. Unlike typical scars, keloids grow beyond the edges of the original injury and may continue to enlarge over time. They can occur following surgery, acne, burns, cuts, piercings or even relatively minor skin trauma.

Although keloids are not dangerous, they can be itchy, tender, uncomfortable or cosmetically concerning. At Clayton Dermatology, our dermatologists assess keloid scars and develop personalised treatment plans aimed at improving both symptoms and appearance.

Signs and Symptoms

Keloids often become noticeable several weeks or months after a skin injury. Common features include:

  • A thick, raised scar that extends beyond the original wound
  • Firm or rubbery scar tissue
  • Pink, red or darker pigmentation depending on skin type
  • Itching, tenderness or discomfort
  • Progressive enlargement over time

Keloids frequently occur on the chest, shoulders, upper back, earlobes and jawline but may develop anywhere on the body.

Treatment Options

Managing keloids often requires an individualised approach, and several treatments may be used to help flatten scars and reduce symptoms.

Treatment options available at Clayton Dermatology may include:

  • Intralesional corticosteroid injections to soften and flatten the scar.
  • 5-Fluorouracil (5-FU) injections, either alone or combined with corticosteroids to improve outcomes.
  • Cryotherapy (liquid nitrogen treatment), which may be beneficial for selected keloids by reducing scar thickness.

Your dermatologist will recommend the most appropriate treatment after assessing the size, location and characteristics of your scar.

When to See a Dermatologist

If you have a scar that continues to enlarge, causes discomfort or affects your confidence, it is worthwhile having it assessed by a dermatologist.

Early treatment may improve the response to therapy and help minimise further scar growth.
