Melasma

Melasma Diagnosis and Treatment

Melasma is a common pigmentation disorder that causes brown or grey-brown patches to develop on sun-exposed areas of the face. It most commonly affects the cheeks, forehead, upper lip and chin.

The condition is frequently associated with hormonal influences, pregnancy, oral contraceptives and ultraviolet exposure. While melasma is harmless, many people seek treatment because of its cosmetic impact.

At Clayton Dermatology, we provide personalised treatment plans to help reduce pigmentation and support long-term skin health.

Signs and Symptoms

Common signs of melasma include:

  • Symmetrical brown or grey patches on the face
  • Pigmentation that darkens following sun exposure
  • Gradual onset over months or years
  • Evenly coloured areas affecting larger portions of the skin

Treatment Options

Managing melasma typically requires a combination of medical treatment and ongoing sun protection.

Treatment may include:

  • Prescription pigment-reducing creams
  • Medical therapies targeting excess pigment production
  • Tailored skincare recommendations
  • Daily broad-spectrum sunscreen to minimise recurrence

Because melasma often returns after treatment, maintenance strategies are an important part of long-term management.

When to See a Dermatologist

If facial pigmentation is becoming more noticeable or has not responded to over-the-counter treatments, a dermatologist can confirm the diagnosis and recommend the most appropriate treatment options.
