Vitiligo

Vitiligo Assessment and Treatment

Vitiligo is a long-term skin condition in which areas of skin lose their natural pigment, resulting in well-defined white patches. This occurs when pigment-producing cells (melanocytes) stop functioning or are destroyed.

Although vitiligo does not pose a risk to physical health, it can affect appearance and confidence. At Clayton Dermatology, our dermatologists provide comprehensive assessment and treatment options tailored to the extent and location of the condition.

Signs and Symptoms

Vitiligo may present with:

  • Distinct white patches of skin
  • Gradual enlargement of depigmented areas
  • Pigment loss on the hands, feet, face or around the mouth and eyes
  • Whitening of hair within affected skin
  • Localised or widespread involvement

The course of vitiligo varies considerably between individuals, with some people experiencing stable disease while others notice gradual progression.

Treatment Options

Treatment aims to stabilise the condition where possible and encourage repigmentation of affected skin.

Depending on your individual circumstances, treatment may include topical medications and medically supervised phototherapy.

Clayton Dermatology offers:

  • A full-body Narrowband UVB (NB-UVB) phototherapy unit for more extensive vitiligo.
  • A dedicated hand and foot phototherapy unit, designed to treat areas that can be more resistant to therapy.

Following assessment, your dermatologist will determine whether phototherapy is suitable and recommend a treatment plan tailored to your needs.

When to See a Dermatologist

If you notice new areas of pigment loss or changes in existing patches, it is advisable to arrange an assessment with a dermatologist.

Early diagnosis allows appropriate treatment to begin sooner and helps exclude other conditions that can resemble vitiligo.
